Robert Goodwin Mitchell papers, 1833-1885 (bulk 1861-1864).

The collection consists of papers of Robert Goodwin Mitchell from 1833-1885. The bulk of the collection contains correspondence (1861-1864) between Mitchell and Nettie Fondren during his service with the 29th Georgia Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Mitchell served mainly in Georgia and along the coast. His letters describe the evacuation of Savannah (Ga.), the battle of Chickamauga (Ga.), the siege of Chattanooga (Tenn.), and the Atlanta Campaign. Nettie's letters, many written from the Lucy Cobb Institute (Athens, Ga.), describe life during the Civil War and news of family and friends. The collection also contains correspondence from other family members or friends, photographs, and a scrapbook containing clippings pertaining to the lives of Robert and Nettie after the war.
